KUALA LUMPUR: The family of the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) crew member accused of sexually assaulting an Australian passenger in France, has engaged the services of a legal firm to protect their interest, the National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (NUFAM) said.

In a brief statement today, the union’s president Ismail Nasaruddin said Messrs Brijnandan Singh Bhar & Co and NUFAM will be assisting the family of the crew member, who is currently detained in Paris.

On August 4, a United States’ based news portal, Cubic Lane, reported that an Australian female complained of the crew member’s alleged “inappropriate sexual behaviour” on board Flight MH20 that was on a Kuala Lumpur-Paris route.

According to the report, the MAS crew member had initially offered to sit beside the passenger to comfort her over her misgivings on flight safety following the two air tragedies this year involving the airline.

But the act quickly turned into sexual assault, the report said, adding that the passenger later informed the French police of the alleged incident upon her arrival at a Paris airport.

The news report said the MAS staff confessed to the incident when questioned two days later and has been placed in custody after he was charged.

In statement issued after the incident hit headlines, MAS stressed it will assist the French authorities.
“Malaysia Airlines expects and accepts nothing short of the highest standards of conduct from its crew and takes such allegations very seriously,” it had said.

MAS has been in the headlines this year over two rare tragedies – still unsolved mystery of Flight MH370’s disappearance on March 8 and the shoot-down of Flight MH17 several months later on July 17.
